The Significance of Thomas-Builds-The-Fire
Sherman J. Alexie’s “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” has multiple interconnecting themes and symbolic ideas throughout his story. Alexie’s story can be simplified as the death of a father changed his son’s life. However, it is more complex than that throughout the story. There are hidden connections all through Alexie’s work. One hidden connection is the character Thomas Builds-the-fire. Thomas is Victor’s childhood friend, and is the reservations goofball, storyteller. Thomas plays a much larger role in Victor’s life than just a childhood friend. While in the Trading Post Thomas said, “I heard it on the wind. I heard it from the birds. I felt it in the sunlight. Also, your mother was just here crying” (182). This quote appears as if it is just cute humor of the men’s shared heritage. However, it is also an indication that Thomas received a prophetic story. Here Alexie uses specific sentence structures and wording to provide a certain mystical image of how the wind, birds, and sunlight told Thomas of Victor’s father’s death. The statement Thomas said is true. However, the way Thomas states the statement makes it appear as though he cannot say it as a fact. This is why Thomas added the statement about Victor’s mother. It provides a sensible and logical explanation to the reader and to Victor of how Thomas knew of Victor’s father death. Since Thomas already knew of Victor’s Father’s death he offers to fund Victor’s trip to Phoenix. Thomas’s offer, however comes with one stipulation, he travels along. Thomas has to make sure Victor arrives in Arizona just as the wind, birds, and sunlight directed him. In addition to his prompt offer, Thomas made another unseemly unimportant move. As soon as Victor made his decision on rather or not to take Thomas offer, Thomas was on Victor’s front porch. This allows the readers to think that Thomas knew of Victor’s decision, as if a little birdie told Thomas of Victor's decision …show more content…

Tradition also plays a big role in the lives of characters such as Victor, Junior, and Thomas, whether or not they realize it. Thomas Builds-the-Fire and Norma Many Horses are very respectable towards their Spokane heritage. They both make a point of engaging in Spokane dancing, storytelling and other ceremonial practices. But characters such as Victor, Junior and James remain distant from traditional values. In fact, Victor pokes fun at various aspects of his tribe’s culture throughout the collection.…

A second instance where dialogue was brilliantly portrayed was on page 392, where the paragraph began with “Victor knew… Thomas would remain the crazy storyteller who talked to dogs and cars.” What was poignant here was the untouched friendship Victor and Thomas left years ago. Thomas’ desire to go and bury half of his Father’s ashes shows his care and concern for his Father and his knowledge of what is best for his friend. True friendships can pick up wherever they left off and true friends never stop showing compassion for former friends, which is exactly what Thomas demonstrated in this passage.…

He had no money and the only source of money he had was one hundred dollars from the BIA and three hundred dollars from his father’s bank account. He needed Thomas, but was running away from this reality. However, this discomfort Victor is about to feel is soon stopped by the character of Thomas Builds-the-Fire, who brings into the story both hope and comic relief. In the versions of, “To Build a Fire” by Jack London, the text is a more realistic representation of the man’s struggle for survival. When the man is drowsing off into a death of freezing, the narrator describes what the man is feeling in that moment. “Then the man drowsed off into what seemed to him the most comfortable and satisfying sleep he had ever known” (London, page 12). In the text the reader can better understand this moment of death then in the film because in the story he does die and in the film it is only an actor portraying his death. When the reader gets to paint a picture of death and struggle on their own it gives them the ability to see real death in their mind, not a fake scene of death that is done by a living actor.…

With Yorick’s discovery of an innovative communication system, Sterne reveals that this new form is more effective than explicitly revealing his character’s emotions. During his encounter with the Lady of Calais, Yorick explains that her melancholy produces a certain feeling of tenderness that causes him to want to cherish her, but instead of conveying this through conventional language, he accomplishes it using the “the pulsations of the arteries,” which he uses to pass along the message from his fingers to hers (Sterne 20). This interaction through the pulses of the heart reveals that not only is bodily function a more convenient form of communication but also a genuine method as it directly involves body organs. “Barn Burning,” written by William Faulkner himself, follows the criteria that he sets for good writing in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. In his speech, Faulkner promotes the idea of expressing “old verities and truths of the heart” in order to create a compelling story. Throughout the start of “Barn Burning,” Sarty suppresses his heart’s truths, but he eventually releases them as Faulkner shows Sarty’s capability “of compassion and sacrifice and endurance”. Sarty develops his heart’s truth as he confronts his loyalty to his father driven by “the old fierce pull of blood” with his just morality. In the beginning, Sarty lies on account of staying loyal to and protecting his father; over time, however, as his father’s barn burning incidents…
