Thomas Buergenthal's Life During The Holocaust

he Holocaust was a tragic event that changed the lives of many. Thomas Buergenthal and his parents had no option but to leave their home town of Slovakia for Poland because of the scary activity of the German army near by. They arrived in Katowice which was a gathering place for German refugees. After applying and receiving for visas to go to England they were then transported by train to go to a depot in England. When their train was attacked by German bombers they were homeless and had no option but to head towards the Russian boarder. After settling in Kielce they decided to call it there new home. With their long stay they found themselves to become closer to community finding jobs and new building new friendships. Unexpectedly they found themselves awaked by the German army and were forced into a selection process in which Thomas and his family were lucky enough to be chosen to work instead of going to a concentration camp. Soon after, Kielce was evacuated and this would then be the starting point of the trip to Auschwitz for Thomas and his family. Ten year old Thomas and his family reached Auschwitz they were separated and Thomas's mother was sent to B camp and Thomas and his father were sent to E camp. Together Thomas and his father thrived off of each others knowledge to help them both survive the frequent crematory attempts by the German guards. This was called The Auschwitz Death Transport which was a 62 mile march from Auschwitz to Gliwice but was later rerouted to go through Czechoslovakia and this proved to be the support they needed.
