Position: Thomas Becket did not actively seek out martyrdom and is simply a martyr in every sense of the word. Thomas Becket never sought out power in any point in his life, it was simply given to him. The same is true of his martyrdom. Becket is quoted as saying, “While I ate out of the King’s dish/to become servant of God was never my wish” (Eliot 45). Becket never asked to become archbishop or a member of the clergy. These positions were given to him and ultimately caused his martyrdom by creating conflicts with King Henry. Because he never asked for his positions of power, he never sought out martyrdom. Additionally, Becket says, "Everything is as it should be for divine service" (movie). He truly believed that he had no control over what power was given him and if he was chosen for archbishop, it was for a reason. Because of this belief, it becomes more clear that Becket never wanted to become a martyr and was simply doing his job as the Archbishop of Canterbury. …show more content…

He had concerns with the idea of leaving England. He was apprehensive about the idea of leaving because he thought that they might be “abandoning one’s fellow sinners to flee to a brave new world”(Morgan, pg.36). He believed it might be a form of separatism. He attempted to convince himself otherwise by attempting to minimize the negative effects of their absence through the short list of involved persons, and the ideal of ‘converting’ the native populations; despite this, he was still believed these to be weak arguments. He eventually convinced himself by the belief that he might have more success in the reform of the Anglican Church by creating a pure partition of the church rather than attempting to “strive in vain for purity at home”(Morgan,…

As Lisa Steffen argued treason was the most serious criminal offense in Britain because it affected the crown and its commonwealth. The laws against treason were based upon the medieval legislation of Edward III, though it was occasionally modified, strengthened or adjusted in order protect the crown. The statute confirmed the authority of the monarch over his subjects and “protected the person of the king and his family.” Therefore, as Steffen observed, monarchs used treason law to confirm and authenticate their dynasty and in their choice of religion it exposes how religion becomes associated with the conviction of treason. For example, Thomas More, a knight lord chancellor of England, was convicted with high treason for refusing to take the Oath of Succession.…

His decision to die for a falsehood- to die a martyr- in the end only gave him a lasting power over his fate and remembered integrity. John Proctor is a character tormented by his past grievances and is in question of his personal morality by…
