“Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time,” is an old saying that means, don’t do the violation if you are not willing to take punishment for it. For some offenders, their punishment or “time,” is a lot less severe than the crime they committed. For three recent offenders in the Syracuse area, that is exactly what they received for their offense, significantly less severe sentence than they deserve. One offender who experienced this was former High School teacher,Thomas McCarthy. McCarthy should be considered lucky with the small sentence he received for his action two years ago. The next offender in the same boat of McCarthy is Bryan Tanner. Tanner will receive a very small amount of nine months for driving stoned on the Thruway with a 4 year old in the backseat. Brian Lennox would be the last person who is giving a sentence that is much less than deserved. His 16 year sentence is not to be justified with crimes he committed. All in all, not every crime is giving the right amount of time, McCarthy, Tanner, and Lennox are prime examples of this.

Why it was such a shock was because like many other people, I knew McCarthy. I attended the same High School he taught at. McCarthy was sentenced 60 days in jail for “forcefully sexually violating” his student at the time. The appalling details of the violation is that McCarthy spanked the student in her intimate parts and made her count the number of spanks. Two months in jail for sexually assaulting a student is not nearly enough. McCarthy is now a registered sex offender and he will be out of jail before a season will even have a chance to change. What makes this case hit home for me even more is the fact that I know the offender as well as the victim. Since I grew up with the victim, I fell very strong against McCarthy for what he
