Have you ever been a victim of procrastination? More than likely, it’s safe to say that everyone has procrastinated at some point in time. For some, however, this tends to become a habit. In “This Was Supposed to Be My Column for New Year’s Day”, by John Tierney, and “The Procrastination Doom Loop--and How to Break It”, by Derek Thompson, opposite opinions are shown in an attempt to defend their beliefs. The entire lecture can be classified into three main parts: the behaviors of procrastination, the side effects of procrastination and solutions to the issue. Firstly, the counsellor lists several behaviors that fully represent the element of procrastination such as “Holiday myths”, “Tomorrow Paradigm”, and “Contingencies”. In her essay, “You Too Can Procrastinate”, Emily suggests that, if done properly, procrastination is not always a detrimental occurrence. The author lists the following steps in her postponement ritual: Do anything to keep from sitting down to write; call a friend and talk to them for 15 to 20 minutes about anything other than the paper in order to build the necessary tension; prepare to write by gathering essential tools and snack and placing them at the workstation; collect ideas related to the topic at hand; finally, sit down and write the paper. The author offers that, if these six steps are followed, “you too can become a master procrastinator.” As a procrastinator myself, it is quite difficult not to agree with Emily’s point of view.…

I learned that there are three types of procrastination: doing nothing, do “something less important” (Graham p.1), or do “something more important” (Graham p.1). The good procrastination is “avoiding errand to do real work” (Graham p.1). One of the most interesting things I read was there is a risky form of procrastination, it is unrecognized because it doesn’t seem like procrastination, which is when you are “getting things done. Just the wrong things” (Graham p. 2). What Graham suggests how to avoid procrastination is deceiving yourself into doing your work.…

Or they put off writing wills, filling out medical directives, installing smoke detectors or backing up their computers until it 's too late.” Levitin uses this previous statement to try to make a light bulb go off in the reader’s head to make sure that they do things such as writing wills, backing up computers, and seeing the doctor sooner rather than later. Procrastination affects many people, I even procrastinated writing this paper. The ways that it affects us can be different, sometimes procrastination doesn’t affect us too much, but other time it can cause major health risks such as, stress or depression. Recognizing this, Tim Urban presented a Ted Talk on procrastination and the dangers it can have. In his Ted Talk “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”, Urban used pathos with a minimal amount of logos and ethos to express his message to his to the audience. Urban also used pictures to support his use of pathos.…

At the same time that procrastination allows me to excel with the rush of adrenaline it provides, it can also place excess pressure on me which can lead to an overall lack of quality in my end product. Often times, as pressure increases, the quality decreases proportionately. I feel that I have come to realize through a few failures in school and during my athletic endeavours that when the quality of the end product matters, procrastination is not the ideal choice. As you work on a task that is of high priority or it’s your first time doing something, waiting to the last minute prevents you from being able to take control of the final end product effectively. If you have to deliver a big speech, have an important interview, or have a championship game to play in, placing yourself under the excess pressure from procrastinating will eventually lead to failure.…
