The year was 1865, it was January and about two month after Abraham Lincoln had been reelected as the president of the United states; the Civil war had been going on for 4 years. It was a difficult time to be president, yet Lincoln took it in strides. He was loved by everyone and could have easily taken the fastest less opposed path to peace, but he had other plans. He planned to abolish slavery and end the war. All of the above described about the 16th president 's life was shown in the movie Lincoln by Steven Spielberg. Surprisingly, the short passage of reading from Fellmans historical book, This Terrible War, described Lincoln exactly like he was portrayed in the 20th century movie. The short reading from the book This Terrible War touches briefly on the background of the president: “Lincoln was a lawyer, gregarious, and with a passion for language” (pg. 18) . The movie also touched on his background yet giving more detail through Lincoln 's actions. In every argument, Lincoln was able to see both sides of the argument like mentioned before, but with those two sides, he was able to conceive a great political tactic. He used his knowledge of the opposing party, to get his way. At one point in the movie, Abraham speaks about how he used the word “property” referring to slaves. He goes on to say that he does not believe that they are property and hates to use that word, but it was the only way to convince the opposing, his law of emancipation during the war, had legal standing and appeal to their tastes. His passion for language is shown in the latter but also shown throughout the movie when he diffuses multiple situations with a joke, story or metaphor. The passage again shows the similarities between the real Lincoln and the portrayed character in the movie by saying: “Lincoln used diplomacy, humor and patient doggedness and to disarm potential foes…” (pg. 18) . His political tactics are one of the reasons he was favored by citizens and did well during his term until his unfortunate
