Writing Prompt: “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”

“We are given one thing by which our lives are measured, one determination. Mine are the stories which can change or not change the world” (42). What is your one thing? Write a three paragraph explaining what your one thing is or would be that you think your life is measured by.

When asked how they measure their life, most people would say their successes. The power that comes with the chair, the trophies collecting dust, the wealth we accumulate on this earth, the grades that decide what true intelligence looks like — the list goes on and on. Most people's definitions of success only deal with the "here and now"

As we skim through the world's manual for life we see what we should be like, the things we need to have, the clothes we should be wearing and the way we should act. These Worldly views have us so focused on the way others see us and the ways in which we want to be seen. Unfortunately, most of us would fail the world’s final exam of true “perfection.” The thing is though, Jesus would also be a failure if you measured His life here on earth by the world's view of success. You’d be surprised how “unsuccessful” Jesus was. He had few material possessions and did not even own a home. He was rejected by most people and even hated by some. Even His friends and those closest to Him deserted Him at times. He was accused and found guilty of things He did not do. He was beaten, spit on, cursed, mocked, and suffered terribly and died the most horrible kind of death known to man at that time, a death on the cross. Measure Him by the way most of us measure success, and calling Him a failure would be an understatement; but in God's eyes that is not true success. The ultimate redemption and salvation of all mankind was accomplished through His Son Jesus. By God's grace and great love for all of us, He sent Jesus to pay for our sins, and now the gift of a restored personal relationship with God and eternal life can be ours. So can we not live

Jesus was known as being the man who went against the ‘norm’ when he saw something that was unjust, he did what he thought was right and ignored what others thought as they just stood by and ignored the bad things in the world that needed fixing. Jesus didn’t care who he was helping and whether or not he would be judged by others if he helped people who didn’t fit into society, he believed that you should help others above yourself no matter who they are or what they have done, he believed it was better to help others and be humiliated by the general public instead of not helping. These actions this relate to a quote from the Philippians 2:3 - “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,”.…

Everything that is accomplished in our lives did not just happen with a simple poof. Every time a person achieves success there are obstacles in the way we might not see these obstacles, but they are there. People were not made to breeze through life with no stress. God put all people in this world to acquire and accomplish things through Him; however, no one has ever accomplished anything through His name without struggle. Jesus for instance took nails at the cross to be apart of God’s plan, most of the disciples died or got sent to jail just for spreading His word, but if we look at the great things they accomplished through God’s name, every struggle and obstacle was worth it.…

The biggest mistake we make about Jesus is making him too small. In essence, we underestimate the fullness of what his entrance into our world meant. He was light breaking into the dark world to set the captives free (Luke 1:78-79), but more than that he was the great restorer of the brokenness that began in the Garden when our first parents—Adam and Eve sinned (Romans 5:15-17). Jesus came to reconcile humanity with their creator God. Often our limiting of Jesus comes from our upbringing—much like Nathaniel in the New Testament.…
