Thirteen Reasons Why Hannah Baker

Decent Essays
In Thirteen Reasons Why Hannah Baker is struggling quite a bit. She tells Mr. Porter that she wants life to end but he does not really do anything about it. She makes thirteen tapes about her suicide and sends them to the thirteen people telling each one how they affected her and led her to her suicide. It is obvious she is struggling because she is sad most days in school and outside of school. Hannah Baker is also depressed. She hates on herself most days. Telling people she is ugly or she hates herself. She does not have friends as she says. She commits suicide and does not tell anyone why besides the people who are on the tapes and hear the tapes. I should get an 11/14 because I checked for everything that should not be on the paper.

Hannah is driven by her academic work and finds comfort in facts and knowledge where emotion makes her uncomfortable and exasperates her. This is illustrated in scene two when Hannah is discussing the hermit of Sidley Park with Bernard, HANNAH. The hermit was placed in the landscape exactly as one might place a pottery gnome. She shows self-hatred and pain by cutting, excluding herself from the society at school, making no attempts to replace the friends she lost, and by not speaking to her parents or anyone else. This behavior, although it seems exclusive in the eyes of her parents and supervisors, is quite common for anyone who is depressed. “Depressed children reported significantly higher level of hopelessness, lower general self-esteem, and lower coping skills than non-depressed children. Their ability to be unable to cope with stress can lead to fewer and less adaptive coping techniques.” (Asarnow, Carlson, & Guthrie, 1987)…
