A curriculum audit is a systematic evaluation of the curriculum structures, processes, and products in a given subject or domain. This audit includes demographic overview of the population of Russell Elementary, provides an analysis of data for prioritizing curricular needs, identifies strengths and weaknesses of the third grade standard based instruction, describes the planning, evaluation, and instructional processes, and provides recommendations and findings to improve the delivery and assessment of writing instruction, based on artifacts and interviews taking place within the curriculum audit.

The first assessment was given in the middle of the second semester and the second assessment was given in the middle of the third semester. The results of the test are hand scored for each student analytically using data points that align directly with the assessment rubric (See Appendix C for Write Score rubric). Each students’ essay identifies the specific weaknesses within a particular measure, such as minimal Evidence/Elaboration, Weak Conclusions and Introductions, and Capitalization and Punctuation errors. The students can receive up to 7 total points, based on the sum of the two scoring categories. Idea Development, Organization and Coherence can receive up to four points, while Language, Usage, and Conventions can receive up to three points (See Appendix C for Write Score rubric). According to assessment information on the Georgia Department of Education Website, the Milestone assessment includes open-ended constructed responses in mathematics and language arts, a writing component within the language arts assessment, and norm-referenced items in all content areas (Georgia Milestone Assessment System, 2015).
