Third Aspect Of A Quest Ehrenreich Analysis

Decent Essays
Third aspect of a quest is that there needs to be a stated reason to go somewhere. In the introduction Ehrenreich informs the reader of how she came up with this idea. The reason she decides to go on this quest was from a conversation she had with a friend. Ehrenreich was having lunch with her friend Lewis Lapham, and decided to bring up her favorite topic poverty. She tells him that somebody needs to experience what poverty is like and then write about their experiences. Lewis tells her that she should do that and write about her experiences when she was working minimum wage jobs.

It is worth mentioning that most of the quotations are from large Symphonic works of composers who were living and writing concomitantly with Mahler. Berio himself in an interview assumes the emphasis placed on 20th century music, most specifically in the last one hundred years. Although the preference for modern works points towards a post-tonal harmonic structure, the majority of quotations are of a more moderate nature, such as Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy rather than the full-blown atonality of Schoenberg, Webern and Boulez. To a certain point, it seems contradictory that an avant-garde composer such as Berio has emphasized most pre-serial works.…

The quest theme has been apparent in literature throughout societies and time periods as an enduring concept that allows for widespread uses. In William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, the Bundren family embarks on a physical journey that places them within the confines of an absurd existence. Their quest, one that subjugates them to the trials and tribulations that would weather the toughest stones, is trekked for a mutual goal of each family member: to bury their dead matriarch, Addie. In forcing the family on this emigration to a seemingly unreachable destination, Faulkner pushes them to the very limits of humanity and constrains them to not only accomplish what they set out to do, but also to introspectively look at why they are doing it, why…

The principle states that if the marginal immigrant makes a non-negative contribution to the treasury you continue to admit immigrants until the contribution goes to zero. Liberals and conservatives support the principle. Liberals believe immigrants are acceptable as long as they benefit the country’s economy positively. Conservatives believe countries should have no issue with immigrants as long as the country is not a welfare state.…

1 in D major, “Titan,” was performed next. It was much longer in duration than the first piece. It showed uniqueness in that it incorporated everyday sounds into the music, such as bulge calls, bird songs, and dance tunes, which provided for a very wide variety of tone colors. The symphony began with a thick-textured undertone in the strings and a two-note “hunting call” in the woodwinds, which persisted throughout the piece. Also present was a bright fanfare in the trumpets, followed by a light descending melody played by the entire orchestra.…

The Question of Hu by Jonathan D. Spence reconstructs the journey of Father Jean-Francois Foucquet and John Hu from China to Europe during mid-seventeenth century. Throughout the book, Spence addresses several issues on cultural differences between China and Europe, with their varied definitions of sanity, moral obligation, and social status. Hu’s question, after spending almost three years in a lunatic asylum, “why have I been locked up?” raises the question whether Hu is insane or not. Spence provides both supporting and contradicting evidences for Hu’s insanity leaving us to evaluate and come up with a conclusion on our own. My conclusion is that Hu is not clinically insane; he is mistreated and misunderstood by people around him.…
