I immediately thought, “Of course to a very limited extent. How many people actually change their community after being inspired by a book they’ve read?” At first, It seemed extremely impossible to change a crumbling community, especially as a teenager. The book “The Fault In Our Stars”, helped support my opinion, since in the book, the two protagonist characters, Hazel and Augustus are both teenagers. This made me question, “How is it possible for a teen coping with a tragedy to be able to change a crumbling community?” In the book, the character’s aren’t perfect themselves and therefore they have an impact on the community they live in, causing the community to not be perfect either. In the book, Hazel Grace Lancaster, Isaac and Augustus Waters all have an imperfection, a fatal flaw or “fault” which makes them different and special. An uncontrollable fatal flaw Hazel has it that she was diagnosed when she was 13 with a terminal form of thyroid cancer, that has ever since spread to her lungs. Another flaw she has is she tries to distance herself from most people because she thinks of herself as a “grenade”. In chapter 6 on pg 99 : “I’m like. Like. I’m like a grenade, Mom. I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, Okay…I just want to stay away from people and read books
