The anger manifest as killing the people he is angry with, committing suicide and letting selfish person have a taste of what they deserved. The killing of the people he is angry with happens in the first story. Ren got really angry and he decided to use a chicken to request god to tell him how many people he should kill. The chicken jumps five times after its head has been cut off and that is how Ren decides to kill five people (Sheng Jin, Sheng’s parents, Sheng’s servant and Zhou De). The suicide happens in the second story when Du Shiniang heard about the deal between Li Jia and Jia Sun Fu which makes her very disappointed and heartbroken. She throws all the valuable jewelry and money into the water before committing suicide. The selfish …show more content…
In the first story, Ren’s action was wrong. Firstly, Ren will have to face death and his father will experience huge pain and grief for his poor son even if Ren told his sister to take good care of their father. Secondly, he may not face death penalty if he only kills Sheng Jin and Zhou De, but he kills 5 people. Even though, Sheng Jin’s parent and servant are involved in this case by helping them cover up the fact, they should not be dead. Overall, his action is reckless. In the second story, Du Shiniang’s action was wrong. Firstly, people should take care their body no matter what happens, and committing suicide is a wrong decision. Even if she is heartbroken, she should continue to live and make herself better to prove to Li Jia’s that his decision is wrong. Secondly, Li Jia is the one who is wrong, but he got to live peacefully as if nothing happened. I just feel bad for Du Shiniang. In the third story, I feel that Yunu’s emotional intelligence is better than Ren and Shiniang. Even though Yunu is crying, yelling and cursing at Mo Ji, she didn’t do any physical damage to him of herself. She just expresses her own …show more content…
In the first story, the author used a diegetic commentary quote to irony Sheng Jin and Zhou De by saying “Thinking only of the joys of the bedchamber, How was he to foresee that death was near?” (p.671). The author also used a diegetic commentary quote to honor Ren by saying “A filial son of a fiery nature when alive, A revered god with a respected name after death” (p.683). I felt that the story is trying to tell us that Sheng Jin and Zhou De deserved to be killed by Ren and nothing is wrong about it. Ren is our model because he is filial to the father and is very humble. In the second story, the author used a diegetic commentary quote to describe love after Shiniang committed suicide by saying “Those who don’t know what love is, hold your tongue! “Love” is a word too deep to understand, If its meaning can be grasped in full, Feel no shame when you’re called a lover” (p.565). I felt the story tries to tell us to be serious in love and that people are easily hurt in a relationship. If you not ready for it, just stop there until you are ready. In the third story, the author used a diegetic commentary quote to describe Mo ji by saying “Full of hopes to climb high through marriage, He little expects to meet his wife again. Beaten, lectured, and shamed, Why does he bother to see new in-law?” (p.487). I feel that Mo Ji not really in love with Yunu and that their marriage is only to help him go to higher level in

It has been said that what we value can be determined only by what we sacrifice. This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. Orleanna made countless sacrifices throughout the novel for her husband.…

The Uncanny in Shen Congwen’s “Three Men and One Woman” In David Wang’s critique, Shen Congwen’s realist writing is a deviance from earlier realism of the May Fourth literature. The change is manifested in his lyrical narratives which repress the outright accusation of the society into a more subtle position. Shen’s short story, “Three Men and One Woman,” is an effort of such “critical lyricism.” Yet what makes this story even more unique is the effect of his lyrical narrative that destabilizes both the textual and meta-textual levels through retelling the story in an uncanny way.…

Women’s roles in society were a controversial thing in the past, women weren’t allowed to act the way they wanted. In the “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard has felt trapped since her marriage but becomes overflowed with joy and the idea of freedom but in the end she dies. In “The Waltz” by Dorothy Parker, the narrator is forced to dance but she doesn’t speak her mind and acts as if everything was fine. Women’s roles in society were very similar but also different, women didn’t have the freedom to speak their mind or had freedom in general which is seen in both the stories. “Story of an Hour” and “The Waltz” are similar because both women feel freedom without the presence of males.…
