Most students are not as confident to speak up for what they believe in if the majority of the crowd says what they believe in is not correct, or impossible. In the story “Thinking Critically, Challenging, Cultural Myths” Colombo states “Culture shapes the way we think; it tells us what “makes sense.” (Colombo 2) This certain quote ties in Mike Rose’s story when Rose states “The vocational track, however, is most often a place for those who are just not making it, a dumping ground for disaffected.”( Rose 126) Both quotes are significant in a student's growth in education. In the society that we live in, most students follow rather than lead in any situation rather than speaking up for what they believe as a whole. In Mike Rose’s story kids that are put through a vocational track do not grow to their full potential, because they are taught repetitive information. We as a human want to fit in, but in our life a person will have to learn how to overcome this embarrassment. In “Thinking Critically, Challenging, Cultural Myths” Colombo states that “But as a culture binds us together, it also selectively blinds us.”(Colombo 3) and this quote ties in with Rose’s story when a student has to act “dumb” to avoid an insult in the story states “It is a powerful and effective defense- it neutralizes the insult and the frustration of being a vocational kid and, when perfected it drives teachers up the wall.” (Rose 128) Most students have to learn how to overcome the fear of being challenged on a belief whether it’s considered to be right or wrong.
