Everyone goes through life trying to be successful; but what actually is success? It is very difficult to define success because it is subjective to the person experiencing it. For instance, to a little child, success could be getting a gold star on his test, for a college student, success could be not failing an exam. Many people, however, just think of success in terms of money. If they cannot buy the same things their neighbors can, they do not see themselves as successful compared to those neighbors. But, how does one become successful? According to Think Like a Freak, by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, there are ways to retrain your brain to make you more successful. Rewiring the brain to incorporate new thinking techniques can jumpstart success in a new, undiscovered way. Business owners and entrepreneurs alike should focus on using techniques that will be easy to integrate into everyday life. According to Frese, author of The Psychological Actions and Entrepreneurial Success: An Action Theory Approach, “...this theory applies more to the first stages of the development of a firm in which entrepreneurs as individuals largely influence what is happening in their firms.”(Frese 3). Here, Frese is discussing the action regulation theory, which can be defined as people actively altering their actions in order to achieve their goals. The author states that this theory is a very important part of making a business more successful because without the ability to actively adapt and shape goals, those goals will never be met. Entrepreneurs should strive to master this method of leadership in order to be successful in their endeavors. Positivity in the workplace is also an integral part of both personal and company success. How to Rewire your brain for Positivity and Happiness, by Michael Chen, proves this by stating: “The unfortunate superpower of the negative is that it has a stronger impact than the positive” (Chen 1). It is proven that negativity spreads three times faster than positivity and is then two times harder to remove from a situation. Based on this information, Chen argues that the sole focus of increasing success should be on the atmosphere in which it is taking place. He says, that without a positive environment, the workplace will crumble due to hostility and drama.
