The Things They Carried, are short stories linked together based on a group of American soldiers during the war. Using my essay, “Getting Drafted” based on the book The Things They Carried, “I will prove that I have mastered Student Learning Outcome #2 “Express a primary purpose in a compelling statement and order supporting points logically and convincingly.”

By beginning my essay with, “If I were to get drafted by the army and have my number chosen would I go and serve or not. Personally, I wouldn’t,” I was able to blatantly express a primary purpose in a compelling statement. With this, not only did I pop a question into my audiences’ mind, but I also explained the main topic of my essay without completely destroying the suspense involved.
