Things fall apart a novel about intertwining stories. Both these stories center on Okonkwo a strong man of an Ibo village in Nigeria. Okonkwo is the main character in this novel. He has many problems in his tribe all these due to his father Unoka. Who is one of the weariest men in this novel? Okonkwo has many children but he has relationships with only two in the novel.
Okonkwo is the influential clan leader of Umuofia. Okonkwo is a strong man of an Ibo village in Nigeria. “His fame is rested on solid personal achievements” (Achebe 4). Since his childhood he was embarrassed of his lethargic father, Unoka. This embarrassment has driven him to succeed. His hard work in war earned him his high position in the clan. Nwoye struggles to be powerful and successful like his father. He is much different than his father, he resembles his grandfather, Unoka, more than his own father. He is lackadaisical like his grandfather. He undergoes many beatings, to teach him how to please his father and make him overjoyed. Then a character by the name Ikemefuna arrives into the Okonkwo family he becomes like an older brother to Nwoye. He teaches him how to be a successful man in his clan. As a result, Nwoye starts to win his father’s approval of being masculine although he still shows a few feminine characteristics to please his father. “When missionaries come to Mbanta, Nwoye’s hope and faith are reawakened, and he eventually joins forces with them.”(Spark notes editors) Okonkwo is frustrated for having borne such an effeminate son and disowns him. He does not show it though because he feels as if it makes him soft. Ezinma is the only child of Ekwefi, Okonkwo’s second wife. Their relationship is strong because he feels as if she would be the perfect son and he states to himself multiple times that he wishes she had been born a boy. He wishes this because her spirit is more masculine than that of his oldest son Nwoye. Ezinma also wins his attention, affection and respect. Her and her father’s kind spirit is what boosts her confidence. Ezinma reminds her father of her mother when she was the village beauty. She also agrees to wait to get married until her family returns from exile. Ezinma does this to help her father’s sociopolitical power.
