Nwoye struggles to be powerful and successful like his father. He is much different than his father, he resembles his grandfather, Unoka, more than his own father. He is lackadaisical like his grandfather. He undergoes many beatings, to teach him how to please his father and make him overjoyed. Then a character by the name Ikemefuna arrives into the Okonkwo family he becomes like an older brother to Nwoye. He teaches him how to be a successful man in his clan. Their relationship is strong because he feels as if she would be the perfect son and he states to himself multiple times that he wishes she had been born a boy.
