Being a father can mean very different things to different people, in this book Okonkwo sees being a father in an incomparable way to the way his father Unoka saw it. In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo struggles to play both the role of a leader, and a father. Okonkwo sees no desire in creating meaningful relationships with those in his life. He chooses society's opinion of him versus his family's. As the story progresses it becomes more clear that Okonkwo deals with his emotions in irrational ways, causing harm to those who are close to him. His concept of power is skewed and he uses it to diminish the value of others. He refuses to show weakness, because he fears being seen the way his father was. On the day of peace, Okonkwo

In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is dominated by his fear of weakness and failure. In the tribe where Okonkwo and his family live, Umuofia, the amount of honor and respect depends on your strength. Since early childhood, Okonkwo’s embarrassment about his lazy, poor and neglectful father, Unoka, has led to his tragic flaw; being terrified of looking weak like his father. As a result, he behaves rashly, bringing a great deal of trouble and sorrow upon himself and his family. Okonkwo’s fear of weakness and failure, which stemmed from his father, leads to the horrid and unmerited treatment he gives to those around him and eventually prompted his downfall.…

This quote greatly depicts the moral of one of Achebe’s most successful novels. In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe the role of women is mostly portrayed as a negative one because in the novel the women do not get treated the same way as men, the women get beat, and the women in the book are seen as property and not as human beings, which is what they are. The women in things fall apart play a major role in the novel because without the women the men would never be anything because in order to be a fascinating leader you need to have many wives, (although that is wrong) but they are still treated as if them are property. For example in the novel it states on page twenty-nine “Okonkwo knew she was not speaking the truth. He walked back to his obi to await ojiugo’s return. And when she returned he beat her very…
