Today women are privileged with the opportunity to break gender standards and have the ability to play dominant roles in a male dominated society. However, In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, you clearly see the roles of women and how they differ from that of the men. It really puts things into perspective to see societal differences on such a large scale. When you envision a woman 's job what comes to mind? Staying at home cleaning, or taking care of the children? Do you think of them in the workforce, or getting a enormous amount of education? If you envision women staying at home and cleaning then you have envisioned the lives of the women in Umuofia. These women were not given many opportunities and very limited freedoms to what they could do. They were expected to do certain jobs throughout the day and were expected to have them finished on time. Even though the women were expected to do these jobs, they still found time to influence the younger generations and teach them life lessons.
