Beginning Question
To what extent does the polarity of a substance affect the distance it travels during TLC using water as the solvent?

Safety Concerns The substances used during the TLC process could possibly be dangerous, so it would be best to avoid getting them on the hands. If one were to accidentally spill the water used in the process onto the floor, a slipping hazard could occur.

BF has an R value of 0.67 and F has an R value of 0.79. MB, NR, MG, and RB have low R values because they didn’t travel that far, so they have a low polarity because they are not attracted to water, which is polar. NR has an R value of 0.28, while MB has an R value of 0.023. MG has an R value of 0.10, while RB has an R value of 0.22. All of these values are significantly lower than the R values of F and BF, so MB, NR, MG, and RB are much less polar than F and BF. …show more content…
When performing TLC, the substance with a larger ratio of spot distance to solvent front would have a higher polarity because it sticks to the mobile phase (water, in this lab’s case) longer than a substance with a lower polarity (Chemwiki). In this lab, methylene blue had the lowest ratio, so it has the lowest polarity, while fluoresin has the highest ratio, so it has the highest polarity. Also, a compound will move farther if it is soluble in the solvent (water) than a compound that is not soluble (Chemwiki). Thin Layer Chromatography is a method used in chemistry to determine what a compound is, as well to separate one compound from another (Thin). Polarity is a compound or molecule’s ability to be drawn to or pushed away by other molecules or compounds (Polarity). To study further, the beginning question could be “To what extent does the type of solvent used affect the distance a spot of a substance travels in

Betacyanin pigments from beta vulgaris vacuoles were use in this experiment to determine the various effects of diffusion into its surrounding environment: 60%detergent, which is shown in the figures below. The four figures below are a set of data that were collected and analyzed the effects of time, salt concentration and ionic compositions on the rate of diffusion. Both figure one and two show a set of measurements between two different salt concentrations representing their absorbance versus time. Both figures one and two have six trend-lines that are all deceleration curves. In figure one, at the initial time of 3minutes, the six data points are relatively close to each other and are overlapping.…

It is important to note that the goal of this experiment was to find the pKa value of bromothymol blue, a pH indicator commonly used in titrations. [UNC, 2017] The pKa is where the number of moles of acid to conjugated base are equivalent. To find this, both Beer’s Law and spectroscopy were utilized in an attempt to make graphs to show just where this value occurred. According to Sigma-Aldrich, the pKa of bromothymol blue is approximately 7.10.…

Determining The Process of Photosynthesis And Cellular Respiration Using Elodea and Yeast Introduction Photosynthesis is an essential process to life on earth, in which plants and other organisms use sunlight to create food from oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Cellular respiration is when energy in food is released and converted to ATP, which is then used as chemical energy to complete tasks within a cell. This process usually requires oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are similar in some areas and different in others. The purpose of both of the process is to produce energy, but they have different ways of achieving this goal.…

Discussion In this study, the Catechol enzyme was studied under the conditions of varying pH, temperature, substrate concentration, and enzyme concentration. In Figure 1, the data suggested that the trend was neither directly nor inversely proportional, but the highest activity rate was at 24°C. Most enzymes denatured at higher temperatures of approximately 40°C, which led to the inability to see any color change (Helms et al., 1998). At lower temperatures, the enzyme was somewhat efficient because molecules move slower at lower temperatures, so enzymes lost productivity.…

    Paper Chromatography

The role of paper chromatography is to separate various and different chemicals/mixtures to show individual components within. If there are any individual components within the mixture, then they will move up the paper at different speeds and this will make the components separate. When carrying out the process, drawing an origin line near the bottom of one of the ends on the chromatography paper will be the starting point of the mixtures that you are trying to separate when they move up the paper. At first hand, the paper will be soaked with a solvent to allow a stationary liquid phase (this phase is when the mixture being tested is being carried through). The components of the mixture may be soluble in different ways so choosing a running solvent that is suitable for this will allow the components to be separated out.…
