In 1996 mount Everest made its mark on history again with yet another large disaster. The night of May 10 eight climbers lost their lives to Everest in a 12 hour period. With a total of 12 deaths in total that month. At the end of april 1996 three expeditions set out to summit Everest with a total of 33 climbers on the mountain, on may 10 nineteen climbers were trapped in the death zone (above 8 000 meters) that night of May tenth. In extreme cases like the ‘96 disaster people are presented with extreme survival situations and true colours show through and they can either show extreme selflessness or extreme selfishness and both. Rob showed extreme selflessness when it was needed most which in the end costed him his life. Rob puts his clients through a proven acclimatization process even though it took longer and more effort. This was just the beginning, rob also organized Sherpas and ropes while going up Everest and worked out summit dates with guides of other expeditions that were not very agreeable or easy to work with however Rob ensured the safety of his team. When Rob showed the most selfless act of anyone on the mountain that season was when he and Doug Hansen (one of his clients) along with 19 other people were trapped in the death zone and facing very extreme conditions. Rob was trapped with and could have left him to die and saved his own life, but Rob stayed in the harsh conditions in hopes of saving Doug.
