Thibault's Identity: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Pretty soon, no one else has entered the factory's ground. She stands there, undecided, a bit afraid, yet her need to assess the true identity of Thibault is too overwhelming for her to turn back. If she does not pursue and does nothing, she reckons, she will be putting at risk not only Simone's daughter but who knows how many countless other little girls. Because, deep in her heart, she is almost certain that Thibault is the one who ambushed and molested Dominique, after which without a thought, he strangled and ditched her in the pond. Already, she feels guilty, for these over eleven years since Thibault left the region. What has he been doing during this lapse? Did he continue his murderous ways? Probably, she assumes, otherwise, why such …show more content…
The Answer came naturally and instantly: Yes, who else had seen the man furtively trailing Domi? With these thoughts, she becomes absolutely resolved not to let evil spread its conquest. The suspicions she harbors against this man are far too real to be ignored, she concludes and with a fatalistic sigh she abandons the safety of her hide-out and begins marching briskly toward the cannery. It's an ugly medium size edifice with a wide and tall sliding portal, where a smaller door is located next to it. Rows of dirty, opaque windows line the two stories gray cement facades. One can see above the windows, running across the top of the wall, in blue faded letters: “LAFONT CANNERY”. Once inside, under the poor light hanging from the high ceiling, she scans the long hallway running in front of her. It's bordered on each side with high metal doors with open transom windows from where Jeanne hears machines running, over the faint voices of the workers. Hesitantly, she moves forward, to the first door on the right which is made of wood and smaller and she has the good fortune to read the plaque which says: OFFICE. Mastering her apprehension, she knocks briefly then …show more content…
This young man of thirty some years is afflicted with a strong strabismus, you know, crossed eyes, poor thing.” “You don't say”, replies the office director, taking off his glasses with surprise. “Certainly, I have heard of a man, in any case, with cross eyes. But he doesn't work here at the cannery. No, my colleague at the slaughter-house down the road has told me about a man like that, only a month ago, I think, over lunch. How could I forget! George, that's the supervisor there, said that recently he caught the man cutting with the table-saw a lamb's legs off while it wasn't dead yet. The poor critter was screaming in pain. Of course, that horrified George. As he told me, it's one thing to kill the animal, but quite another to inflict unnecessary suffering. Apparently, it's not the first time this employee has grossly mistreated the livestock which ends-up in the meat packing shop. They use machine saw you know, but still, they're supposed to watch out for the ones that didn't get killed properly. The problem is, as my friend stated, that it's near impossible to find employees willing to work at the slaughter plant, so, he has severely fined and reprimanded him, but in the end, he has kept him employed.” Upon listening the gruesome tale, Jeanne had turned deadly white and would have fainted, if she had not been

An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language. With the usage of petrifying imagery, simile, and personification in the passage from Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Crossing (1994), he conveys a depiction of a young man and his treatment of a wolf, which offers readers an insight of the lasting power of death and the dramatic impact that the experience has on the main character. McCarthy's description of the chilling environment of wild life, gives the readers goosebumps, displayed when “he pulled the blanket about his shoulders and sat shiver-ing in the cold…” McCarthy's pronunciation on “shiver-ing” emphasizes the frigid habitat. “Coyotes were yapping along the hills to the south and they calling from the dark shapes of the rimlands above him where their cries seemed to have no origin other than the night itself” the author wants to give a sense that the main character is feeling that he’s exposed to the harsh habitat.…
