Jocks: They are more than Their Stereotypes. In society, we find ourselves making quick judgments about others without knowing much about them. These judgments are brought on by assumptions made about a person based off of something they are involved in or people they spend time with; things they do with their lives. These judgments brought on by assumptions are called stereotypes. Stereotypes are created by preconceived judgments on a group of people. For example, people will group others in categories such as a nerd, geek, weirdo, prep, jock, emo, know-it-all, and etc. People are not what they appear to be through the idea that they are only their stereotypes. Speaking in terms of stereotypes specifically a “jock” is considered to be a lug-headed athlete. Jocks are stereotypically seen as athletic and big. They are viewed as people that only have their athletic ability to succeed in life. It is assumed that jocks are unintelligent, that they have to cheat to get through life. Athletes within themselves are in nearly all cases “student” athletes. All student athletes must maintain a certain grade point average to remain a part of the athletic team they find themselves on. Although student athletes are viewed as unknowledgeable they tend to exhibit characteristics that support their abilities to be dedicated and determined in many aspects of their lives including education. The stereotype would have you believe that athletes are only capable of being athletes while many find themselves striving for success in every part of their life while maintaining above average grade point averages. Not to say that all athletes find themselves succeeding greatly in academics however, it is stereotypical to assume all athletes are unable to do
