Thesis Statement Analysis

I have graded myself an 8 on the AP rubric. I have graded myself this numerical score because I constructed a sound thesis: “The author utilizes a parody and logical fallacies- portrayed as logos- to satirize how products are marketed to consumers.” Following my thesis, I directly analyzed how the author used these two devices to mock product advertisement. It is evident that I attempted to tie the examples given in both paragraphs to my central thesis statement in order to describe a trend in the author's writing style, tone, and to answer the prompt: as a 8 graded paper should. I believe that strengths in my writing include the clarity of my ideas and my ability to successfully answer the prompt. For example, I provided specific evidence

Go into paragraph and talk about how before white males were in power blah blah and how Lincoln wanted to abolish south leaders altogether and how at first American society was not really a democracy at all and how this info in the whole paragraph is America moving one step closer to democracy. In McPherson’s book, he refers to the economic environment of the South as being a slave reliant one in which it greatly depended on its predominantly agriculture and plantation systems, while the North focused more on equality and the rights of the people. The article “Miscalculation on Visas Disrupts Lives of Highly Skilled Immigrants” (2015), by Julia Preston, states the State Department and Homeland Security allowed the department to give anticipating immigrants news of them being able to take the next step to obtain a green card. The author provides background information about the situation, along with reasons as to why the incident occurred, and its impact on immigrants. Preston attempts to inform about the episode and provide an explanation to the immigrants involved, through the use of rhetorical appeals. Preston establishes ethos before the article starts, as she is a reporter of a reputable newspaper, which gives her credibility. She starts off her article powerfully by providing context for those who are unaware of the situation; in the beginning of September, the State Department told thousands of highly skilled legal immigrants that they “would be able to advance early to the next step: filing a formal application.”…

I didn’t have a thesis in my original exam draft, because I didn't know what a rhetorical analysis was. The lack of a thesis made it very hard to properly organize my essay. My new thesis is "In his passage he focuses on three states of mind that he attributes to the existence of slaves. These three states of mind are happiness, loneliness, and anger and are chosen because they are easily relatable and make the audience more open to his story. " This new thesis is stronger because it directly adresses the prompt and provides a foundation on which to write my essay.…

Hello all, I am Ruth Abraham and as a representative of Free the Children, I hope you enjoyed my Public Service Announcement about the nationwide nuisance to society: homework. Optimistically, my announcement has provided insight on the extended list of homework's negative effects and has compelled most of you to alert your local educators of the negative effects by your preferred means of communication. I would appreciate any comments or constructive criticism, but prior to any feedback, I would like to elaborate on all significant persuasive techniques-- ethos, logos, pathos, rhetorical questions, parallelism, and repetition-- manipulated to completely engage the audience. In order to emphasize my perspective, I employed the rhetorical device repetition.…

Great job on your thesis statement, claims, and evidence in this week three discussion. So, I was reading your thesis statement, claims and evidence and I agree with Wilbert that officers should wear cameras on their vest to stop a lot of the hearsay situations because in an argumentative moment happens truth and lies get mixed up. For this reason, cameras will reveal what have led up to that action, even though in media that do not always happens. After, reading your claims and evidence, I agree with Trenton pointing out your second evidence on claim B is somewhat red herring. Overall, you did a great job on this discussion and I cannot wait to read your rough draft on week 4 discussion.…

I formatted my paper the way I did for a specific reason. I did not make a specific argument to make a point. I wanted to make the point that there are two sides of every argument and that you do not have to pick a specific belief, instead you should be open to others belief. The fact that you wanted us to pick a specific argument about something that we may not care about or have any belief or opinion about is something that I did not want to do. I think that people should have their beliefs however they should be open to other people opinions and beliefs.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
