This which was the first federal law designed to “protect employees from employment discrimination based upon that applicant or employee race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.” (Public Law 88-352). Regardless to this law though discrimination is still happening through employment as we speak. “I've seen many make brilliant grades in college. And yet when they come home in the summers to earn a little money, they can't get jobs according to their education or capabilities.” When the Public Law 88-352 was created it was to overthrow any activity of this sort. But as I read an article, “In hiring, is still a problem” (November 2014), the author Brett Arends discusses how four researchers submitted similar fake applications for jobs just changed the race and major. The results came back that African Americans were “16% less likely to get called in for an interview”. Although discrimination has decreased by a landslide, it continues to go on.
The issue discussed is discrimination throughout employment and as a black person this relates to me because I am aware that my opportunities may be limited. I know that I may be challenged with unjust situations that I'm prepared to be faced with. Socially I would have to work harder for what I want and come to understanding that things will not be handed to me. It's unfair but it's how the world works.
