Morality of Homosexual Marriage
Thesis Question: With homosexual marriage becoming more socially accepted, should the catholic church also begin to view this as a moral act?
Catholic Church Perspective/Against: The Catholic Church takes a very high view of marriage and how humans act sexually. “As the account of Genesis shows, marriage and sexuality were created by God and given to mankind as gifts for our benefit” (catholic.com). “Allowing gay marriage would only further shift the purpose of marriage from producing and raising children to adult gratification” (gaymarriage.org). A California Supreme Court ruling from 1859 stated that "the first purpose of matrimony, by the laws of nature and society, is procreation.” Court papers filed in July 2014 by attorneys defending Arizona 's gay marriage ban stated that "the State regulates marriage for the primary purpose of channeling potentially procreative sexual relationships into enduring unions for the sake of joining children to both their mother and their father... My research showed some very negative comments that many catholics view on same sex relationships and some very disturbing views on it. Many people were referring to same sex marriage as a sin and were considering it “unnatural”. My opinion on the topic is that everyone should have the right to fall is love with whoever they want whether that person is a man or a woman. Pope Francis is changing many catholics perspectives which I believe is a remarkable thing that should have been done a long time ago. I believe that with society changing so should the catholic churches beliefs when it comes to homosexual relationships. Love is love no matter what gender and everyone has the right to love who they want legally and
