In the article “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay”, Foley , argues that the five-paragraph formula discourages students from discovering new ideas, and also prevents them from thinking creatively. The five-paragraph formula continues to be taught in high schools is because of teacher survival. According to the author the five-paragraph formula distorts the mindset of the students as well as counters basic goals of writing. Foley argues that "as soon as students meet their quota of three body paragraph, they are free to stop thinking about their topic." Because the formula of the five-paragraph essay indicates to students that they need only to develop three points that support a thesis, neglecting the connecting relationships between these…

Upon skimming the later essays of, “Signs of Life in the USA” by Jack Solomon and Sonia Maasik, I felt especially perplexed by what I read on pages 248-249 on the first paragraph of the essay, “Advertising Does Not Stand Alone” by Julia B. Corbett. After deep consideration, I ultimately determined that this portion of the essay begins by explaining how nothing in society can have power without working for the benefit of other institutions as well as its own. The writing goes on to explain that advertising doesn’t exist on its own, but instead is tied to a wide range of other institutions. This paragraph then concludes with the idea that advertising will forever remain powerful and influential because of its incredibly widespread existence. In terms of the entire essay, I feel that this opening paragraph works to establish a lot of background for what the…

Two months has already passed by since this course has started. We have been doing a lot of things which might be the review of things from high school but there are also topics which we have learned after attending this Basic Skills course. One of them would be reading essays and to analyze them in groups. When we were told to analyze Tannen’s essay, I found it difficult to analyze and fully understand so the lesson on Tannen’s essay analysis was useful and helpful for me. I have tried to annotate the essay by myself however I was not able to fully understand what she wanted to convey to the readers after reading her essay of “How Male and Female Students use Language Differently”.…
