In the book The One, America is in the final weeks of the selection. America has to work even harder when it comes to getting Maxon to want her. America endures many difficulties in this chapter of her life such as her father passing away and getting shot in the arm while meeting her new friends August and Georgia. America also has to try and get the King’s approval which is anything but an easy task, considering he has a deep hatred towards her. In this journal, I will be visualizing, questioning, and clarifying.

I am curious about this considering America’s dad was a northern rebel: “My father was a Northern rebel”(Cass 247). America’s dad hid that he was a rebel very well; however after America read the letter he left for her and connected the dots, she became ascertained. For example, there were people at his funeral that America had never seen before: “Lots of people I’d never seen before came to Dad’s funeral”(Cass 233). America’s father also named her after the country that was lost due to Gregory Illea, and he had a half-destroyed history book in his possession hidden in his room. Kriss is also a northern rebel, which is why I wondered if they knew each other: “I just support the cause”(Cass 262). Kriss was very scrupulous when it came to keeping her secret. The only reason America realized that she was a rebel was when she saw the eight-pointed star on her neck at a party. Kriss eventually admitted to being a rebel, but told America that she doesn’t participate in any illegal activity such as protests. Kriss was presented to the King before the Selection, therefore she would get picked without the King knowing she was a Northern rebel. I just figured that Kriss and America’s father knew each other, as a result of them being a part of the same cause. It is never stated if they did know each other. For these reasons and it not being stated, I have to wonder if Kriss and America’s dad knew each
