Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” contains several short stories each containing their own morals. Two of these stories are “The Life You Save May Be Your Own" and "Good Country People", both of these stories take place in the South and revolve around a seemingly innocent man who ends up taking advantage of a young woman. In “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, a man wanders to the house of an elderly woman willing to help out for no pay, and eventually is married to her daughter who he leaves stranded but only after taking some of the family 's possessions. “In "Good Country People", a man appears at a house uninvited with the intention of selling bibles, after connecting with the mother, he is introduced to the daughter who …show more content…
Pointer appears at the house of an older mother known as Mrs. Hopewell with the intention of selling bibles. Mrs. Hopewell lives with her daughter Joy (Hulga) as well as the Freemans, a family hired to do work around the house. Although she has no intention of purchasing a bible, Mrs. Hopewell continues to entertain the salesman who she believes is pure. She proceeds to invite him to dinner and says, “Good country people are the salt of the earth!” (O’Connor, 188) Hulga however, has an immediate dislike of this man, being a philosopher and atheist herself, she doesn’t see much in him and says to her mother, “Get rid of the salt of the earth, and let’s eat” (O’Connor, 188) Mrs. Hopewell also views this stranger as a potential suitor to her daughter, especially after learning that he had the same heart condition that her daughter had that would warrant them a shorter …show more content…
They are freely able to take whatever it is they want from the women, not caring about their humanity or they danger they have put them in. Lucynell from “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” is now left asleep and stranded at a restaurant far away from home, having being described as a hitchhiker with no car or money and to make matters worst, she is also a deaf-mute. Hulga from "Good Country People" is left in a loft without her prosthetic leg which allows her to walk and has ultimately left her stranded in this loft which is desolate and too far away from her home for her to call out for help. Thus proving that men in the South who show up at your doorstep uninvited and seem to be polite and “good country people” are not to be trusted, as they have an ulterior

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

“You can never tell when you’ll need the word of God, Hulga,’ he said” (O'Connor 110). This particular quote comes from “Good Country People” written by Flannery O’Connor in 1955. At this point in the story, Manley Pointer and Hulga had just met at an embankment and begin to discuss the purpose of him bringing Bibles to their ‘meeting.’ O’Connor wants the reader to understand the connection of God and salvation among individuals in her writing due to her Catholic background. Flannery O’Connor demonstrates salvation as it is ever so present in her other short stories such as “Revelation,” “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “The Life You Save May Be Your Own.”…

It is later noted that Joy changed her name to Hulga against her mom’s wishes. This is slightly humorous but also shows her rebellious and stubborn nature. Despite Mrs. Freeman having two daughters herself, they are merely mentioned and it is assumed they are not an integral part of the story and are instead a slight distraction for what’s to come. The title comes from Mrs. Hopewell’s description of her tenants, the Freemans, as being good country people. The mentions of the country and how these southern people tend to act is appropriately used as it is a piece of Southern Gothic…

In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style, a work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the tone of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story. Her take on the characters is a complex mixture of agreement and disapproval.…

A major theme of Flannery O 'Connor 's “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” is what makes a person good. There is no clear answer, neither in the text nor in life. It is safe to say that a good person can be defined as one that is honest, kind, and always tries to do what is right. It is ironic then, maybe even a bit hypocritical, that the Grandmother is one of the most immoral characters in the story and yet she spends much of her time talking about what makes people good, judging others based on little to no information about them, and trying to convince the Misfit, a serial killer that just murdered her family, of his own goodness.…
