Once people accept the difficult change, they will become more open-minded and explore it thoroughly. Afterwards, they will become committed to the change and will work towards making it succeed. For instance, Alma accepts the bullying obstacle and commits herself to granting the girls their right to carry the water bucket. Moreover, the other girls commit to sticking with Alma and helping her out as the narrator states on page 8 that, “...[they] stuck to her like burrs.”. In addition, as people encounter similar difficulties, a strong relationship gets built; this relationship in turn helps them overcome the obstacles. Today in society, many people share their difficulties online and people with similar obstacles, reply instantly; the same goes for life outside the Internet. Plus, when one compares his situation with another, he/she gains self-awareness and as a result, becomes more free from societal norms. When Alma is targeted by the boys, the other girls directly come to help her and to stand up against the boys. Prior to, the girls never believed in the idea that they could stand up against the boys. This is revealed when the magazines that the girl’s desire, are always taken by the boys and they are only allowed to play as outfielders in softball. Furthermore, on page 6, the narrator states that, "[i]nstead of...watching Alma get beaten up as we usually did[,]...the girls rushed right in to try and help her...[and] we somehow managed to get...ourselves out...with only a few bruises and torn stockings.". Challenges and obstacles makes one realize his/her true potential. Plus, humans react to these obstacles by embracing them. The girls would never had known that they could stand up against the boys if Alma had not questioned the rights of the girls. Even though they got a bit hurt, they developed a feeling of self-confidence. When a new obstacle is created, humans always find a new potential that they had never known about and at the same time, also get to demonstrate it. The girls in the story discover that they can stand up to the boys and do the same tasks as them and as a result, they get to demonstrate this when they carry the water bucket.
