The Tail of Friendship

Back in the years of 1200 BC there’s a story of two best friends named Theseus and Pirithous. These two were considered heroes back in that day. They then decided that great heroes deserve better wifes, and so what women would be better than Zeus’ daughters. So this is where their friendship would be put to the test. But what is friendship and is it even fair to say that these two were friends? There are a lot of questions that can be asked from this story but so few that can be answered. Through this paper it gives a better idea of the relationship between Theseus and Pirithous as they take on Hades, God of the underworld, as they try to complete their task of finding wifes.

To start you should know the correct definition of friendship because we all have our own idea of what it could be. When I was young my Mother thought me a trick to spelling the word “friend”. Her tick was the it’s F-R-I then E-N-D because they are your friend till the end, which was a very helpful tip at the time.

The first way is seeing as the friendship ending. When Heracles came to the underworld he first rescued Theseus, and then unsuccessfully attempted to rescue Pirithous. Theseus then decides to leave his best friend down there for the rest of his life to be tortured. After everything they had been through together and their bond was made Theseus travel to the underworld to attempt a mission they created together, he left his best friend and never went back. That’s why after returning from the underworld his life was ruined, he was no longer a king and lost his mother and captured wife. This can be explained by carma for leaving Pirithous in the underworld, Theseus was forced to live in misery the of his life. This can be a viewed as from the ancient greeks as simply philos as the two showed affection towards each other but never excelled to the next leave of
