He knew he had to defeat the Minotaur, and save the innocent Athenian men and women forced into the maze hours before Theseus entered its unforgiving clutch. But he didn't know where to look first. Bones littered the ground, leading Theseus to believe he was close to the dreaded monster known as the Minotaur. This certainly rings true in two graphic novels: Maus: A Survivor’s Story, written by Art Spiegelman, and Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi. Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman’s experience as a Polish Jew in the Holocaust. Persepolis, an autobiographical novel, follows Marjane, a religious young girl who has a passion for activism growing up during the Islamic Revolution.…

In his Letters to Herodotus, Epicurus’ material outlook assumes that all things are made out of atoms, an argument that he extends to the soul. He raises the point that the soul is material and capable of sensation, and these sensations build out thoughts; however, this assumption tends to categorize human thoughts and limit originality and creativity. In the text, Epicurus explains that the soul is a structure that is material and primarily used for sensation; these sensations become responsible for our thoughts and reason. The soul’s relationship to the body is important in this respect.…

Socrates was renowned for his ugliness, and the Minotaur – being a grotesque monstrosity of two species combined together – was not likely pleasant to view. While this certainly may seem trivial and seem coincidental, it does further the strength of the analogy between the circumstances of the Phaedo and the µῦθος of Theseus and the Minotaur as here…

The altar of Zeus, which is usually referred as the Pergamon altar, is a giant monument constructed under King Eumenes II (Campell, “Pergamon”) on one of the terraces of the Acropolis in Pergamon. It is one of the numerous sculptural monuments that the Pergamenes aim of commemorating their military achievements (Pollitt 81). The altar is a part of the Acropolis that includes the library and the sanctuary of Athena on the sides (Fig. 1), which was built to worship their patron goddess Athena and further claims the new identity of Pergamon as the new Athens (Barringer 349). The date of the altar is uncertain, but it might be from 180 to 160 BCE (“Pegamonmuseum”). After the altar was discovered by a German expedition at the end the 19th century,…

The two different "demigods" Perseus and Heracles are different in many many ways, but also there are even the most littlest things (that really are the big things) that make the two similar. Both of the demigods are similar by being heroes, sons of Zeus, strong warriors, and the two were both born with a curse. As i was saying before these are the littlest BUT important similarities between the two. Perseus is different from Heracles by many ways, Perseus was a great demigod, he has done amazing things to benefit him and to save many other people, one of the things is he risked his life for is mother by going on a mission to kill Medusa, another thing is that he killed serpent (this may sound like a negative thing he could've done but…

In this paper, I will make that the argument that pleasure or pain’s absence are not the only things worth pursuing for their own sake. Epicurus—a psychological hedonist—argues that “the end of all our actions is to be free of pain and fear” (Epicurus, par. 6). To summarize his argument, he states that pleasure is the ultimate result of all of our actions.…

William Shakespeare’s comedy play A Midsummer Night’s Dream has a variety of characters, a determined nobleman, a love-struck woman, a meddlesome fairy, but most importantly, a man of rationality, Theseus. He is the Duke of Athens and if any citizen has any sort of dilemma, they would feel obliged to go to Theseus. In the 5th and final act of Shakespeare’s play, Theseus goes on a poetic rant on how the main characters of the play are exaggerating on their enchanted night, and how he sees poetry and love to be foolish. Theseus’ speech is appropriate to him in the way that his character is the pure embodiment of rationality. (Shakespeare 5.1.2-22)…
