The setting of this play is Ancient Greece, in the city of Athens. The first stage is the Palace, where the Duke of Athens, Prince Theseus, resides. The other setting is the forest outside of the city, which is also a favored abode of the fairies. The story taking place in midsummer is in part because of its romantic themes, which is traditionally a time for marriage in Britain and it’s Roman influences; this is because of Mayday, a fertility festival, and the month of June, named after Juno, the goddess of marriage. Despite this Ancient and somewhat mystical setting, many elements of the play come from british medieval/elizabethan culture.
