The first time Theresa acts as a mentor is when she aids Paul when he passed out . When they are in the Q-hut she nurtures him like a mother would to her son her son in time of need; she brings him blankets and a cup of coffee to keep him warm (Bloor 226): Luis said, “ no more work for you in the groves” (227) . She stressed this like a mom would, she got stern and pointed her finger in his face. She makes sure he is ok throughout this scene this is when we realized that she is somewhat of a mom figure (226). Now when we say gifts we do not mean a thing with shiney paper and a big bow . No, I mean a gift as in a gift of advice or introducing a person who gives good advice and will help through the story that's the gift we are referring to in the story. One gift is when she introduces Paul to Louis. That is a gift in the end because Lois taught Paul a lot about himself and showed him the farm and shared the experience with him “this is Louis my brother” she also helps Paul fit in “sit with us at lunch” this shows Paul her desire to make him fit in. She advises Paul in two major parts in the story. She advised him not to go to Louis’s funeral because she doesn't want Tino and Victor to start a fight she doesn't want him to get hurt at all , “you BEST not be going to Louis’s funeral”.
