Life safety and property protection from further damage is the main priority for fire fighters. They may have to damage parts of the scene to save or protect lives. The majority of the evidence get destroyed or lost from the activities done by fire service. That result in the spoliation, contamination, removal, loss, unnecessary movement of physical evidence, complication of the scene and detraction of the evidence validity. Therefor it becomes harder for fire investigators to figure and conduct testing on what was responsible for the fire. (David J. Icove and John D. DeHaan., 2012). Therefor fire fighters are trained and instructed about their responsibility on the fire scene regarding fire investigation. (NFPA, 2004).

Evidence preservation should begin with the arrival of the first fire responder’s for example firefighting units or the police authorities. (NFPA, 2004). First fire responders must understand how the lack of preservation of the evidence can result in the destruction, contamination, loss, or unnecessary movement of physical evidence. The following activities like fire suppression, pulling ceilings, breaking windows, collapsing walls, performing overhaul, use of power tools, rescue, movement of knobs and switches, salvage efforts cause unnecessary damage and can adversely affect different forms of evidence. Overhaul is a fire fighting operation where the fire fighter remove some of the structure content to extinguish the hidden fire (smoldering fire) in upholstered furniture (example polyurethane foam), walls, ceilings, voids, partitions and floors that may result in the re ignition of the fire.
