He works hard but also takes advantage of everybody around him such as the Sunday family or H.W. Daniel’s pretend son. The main characters are Daniel Plainview, a visionary oil businessman, H.W. his pretend son, Eli Sunday a teenage preacher whose twin brother, Paul Sunday, tipped Plainview off to the town's plentiful supply of untapped oil. Although Eli and Paul are enemies they ride the same boat. The movie is set up in the late 19th and early 20th century in California, in a little town called little Boston. You can infer that it is a 19th, 20th century movie because of the clothing and all the setup. The houses were all made of wood, poor people rode horses instead of driving cars and they were building railroads. The clothing helped a lot too; they wore overalls, boots, high pants and coveralls. The Director’s overall purpose is to show how people is. He wants to show the viewer that life is hard and sometimes there are obstacles and some people that is not going to help you at all, they are going to go against you.
