The people were hopeful he was going to do great things for them. It was not uncommon for a leader to betray its people which often lead to the deterioration of the trustbond. Dishonesty is another common theme in the literature that often happens after hope. Using diction, the author shows how betrayed the people were by the dictator. Diction is used in "On African Writing," shows betrayal and dishonesty. "Hunting, marrying, hating, killing," (49) shows their new leader abusing his power instead of supporting his people who once supported him. Some metaphors found in the writings also show this dishonest relationship. In "On African Writing," one in particular stands out as a metaphor for the untrustworthy government. "Drinking out of Palm wine tumblers." (50) Instead of helping his people he is living the life opf luxury with no cares in the world. The authors also allude to real untrustworthy events. These emotional words set the connotation of how death really affected the people. Death metaphors also make their appearance in African Literature. One metaphor in particular from "On African Literature," displays how death can spread to all ages. "Mothers also ache ? playing bau on sofas?" This is most likely referring to the children who have been taken away from their homes for war or hard labor. Many of the deaths are assumed to be real. Many of the author's experience death and allude to it in their writing. In "There Is No Exile," the main character is surrounded by a dying village. This is alluding to how it often was; death could take anyone, anytime easily. The three themes discussed was major feelings felt by many African People living in a colony or dictatorship. By analyzing the literature we will see how these emotions are put together into a story that describes what the life was like. Just as any other civilization a lot can be learned from the literature of the
