Therapy Vs. Antidepressants
While researching the books and articles by mental doctors about the effectiveness of cognitive therapy compared to Antidepressants and other forms of medication in teenagers, I found medical professionals who performed experiments and published their findings into books and online articles. These professionals organize their writings by beginning with background information, followed by conducting a form of experiment concluded by their discovery. My goal in this paper is to find out which form of treatment is more effective and long lasting out of cognitive therapy and Antidepressants in teenagers. Clinical depression is having feelings such as helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness and other negative feelings for weeks, months or even years at a time. Clinical depression is very popular in teenagers. Clinical depression in teenagers and adults are very different. When dealing with teenagers with depression, cognitive therapy is more Beneficial, effective and long lasting compared to Antidepressants and other forms of chemical medication. According to Mayo Clinic article ‘Teen depression’ “Issues such as peer pressure, academic expectations and changing bodies can bring a lot of ups and downs for teens. But for some teens, the lows are more than just temporary feelings — they 're a symptom of depression”. Teenagers are under a lot of stress whether it may be school related, family oriented or friend related. Teenagers are at a sensitive point in their lives where they are trying to figure out where they belong in this world, who they want to be and who they actually are. Some people experience a lack of energy ; always tired feeling, the inability to concentrate, insomnia which is not being able to sleep, hypersomnia which is over sleeping or thoughts of suicide. Certain patterns may be detected when assessing people with depression. Each mood disorder is categorized by a unique set of symptoms or diagnostic criteria which are listed in a book called the diagnostic and statistical Manual of mental disorders 4th edition. There are different types of mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, cyclothymic disorder, dysthymic disorder, major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder can be known by clinical depression. Dysthymia is a more subtle long lasting form of depression that attacks women more than men.
