I interviewed Dr. Ann Boyer Holmes. She is a licensed clinical social worker, specialized in anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. She works for the women’s center and does no-fee therapies through a grant from “Access Hope,” which is a non-profit organization provides short-term counseling for students without health insurance. The reason why I chose to interview her was to learn about one of the sub-sectors within the field of psychology and Social Work. Also, she is my therapist, who I have been working with about a year so knows me well. Therefore, I thought she could let me know whether I could fit in this particular career and provide realistic perspective as someone involved in the field I am the most interested in.
The question and response provided me with the most valuable information was about preparation she would recommend for someone who wants to enter in this field. I always believed that life experience is the most important thing to have to be a successful clinical psychologist because this is something people cannot have easily and the key to have a genuine empathy. However, she answered that young psychologists these days try to approach problems with logic and knowledge, not with emotions. Thus, she thinks that life experience can be a great teacher, but not necessary.

This information is also one of the most valuable pieces in this interview because I realized again that this occupation is hard to have as a lifelong job. Some people told me that it is okay because most psychologists have therapy as well; however, even a person who has been facing these challenges for more than 20 years still sometimes feel overwhelmed. This information was somewhat miserable to me but good to

During this week’s assignment I found the interview of Dr. Allen Frances was very interesting. Being in the Human Services program here at SCC and wanting to become a social worker I have been told that I need to be familiar with the DSM-5. I definitely agree with him that normality is difficult to define and it has become a cultural concept rather than a medical concept. Dr. Allen Frances states that our society is already immersed in pill popping which I didn’t find surprising at all. My opinion and viewpoint towards this is I feel like sometimes people get diagnosed incorrectly but any easy solution to make someone feel better is by taking medications and switching them up if some aren’t working.…
