The Therapeutic Recreation Ontario defines TR as “The purpose of TR is to enable all individuals to achieve quality of life and optimal health through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure.” (About Therapeutic Recreation, n.d.) I always believed our therapeutic recreation (TR) department was providing meaningful activities that enhanced our residents’ quality of life. Prior to taking this course, I felt I had a good understanding of the TR process and that the programs provided by my department were genuinely therapeutic to the residents. For instance, the objectives I developed for the goal “The resident will reduce anxiety by participating in two programs a week of their choice by December 31, 2016”. included: 1. I realize I must select small group size activities that are specifically designed to help the residents with responsive behaviours meet their goals. (Buettner L. L., n.d.) For the example of the resident with anxiety, instead of asking the resident if they would like to attended a group physical activity, which may or may not decrease their anxiety, I will ask and motivate the to take part in a smaller and better program design to reduce anxiety in older adults, such as ’Tai chi for older adults’. Tai chi is an excellent way for older adults to reduce stress and anxiety and it can be delivered in a small group setting. (Clinic, n.d.) In this example, I can offer an activity that is enjoyable to the resident, has predictable outcomes, with measurable objectives that will ensure attainable
