Prior to starting my program in educational counseling, I strongly believed that I wanted to work in a four year setting. However, when I took ‘Group Counseling’ and met Dr. Mosqueda, she slowly convinced me to seek out the community colleges. As the class progressed, she mentioned the opportunity of doing hours at El Camino College, in particular the First Year Experience (FYE) program, so I decided to take the offer. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

When transitioning to UGA as a freshman, I had tons of questions about the campus and things to do in Athens and didn’t know who to ask. I know I would have benefited from the Peer mentor program and wish it was available when I was a freshman. I want to be a peer mentor because I want to ease the often scary transition from high school to college for a new freshman. When I was a freshman, I spent most of my time either in class, at the dining hall, or in my dorm. I didn’t branch out because I didn’t know what else there was to do on weekends besides football games and I ended up going home most weekends.…

Several contenders challenge these arguments by stating that it is not realistic to think that a mentoring program can support all of a child's needs, especially if the child initially comes in with programmatic issues and circumstances. They furthermore state that these at-risk youth need more counseling and therapeutic intervention from trained professionals opposed to a typical volunteer (Thompson and Kelly-Vance (2001). For example, a program targeting juvenile offenders indicate mentoring alone may not combat the issue and change the behaviors. Repeated offenders were three times more likely to be arrested than those who had no chronic issues. The findings also suggest one-on-one mentoring does not seem to be more beneficial over group…
