Icek Ajzen's Theory Of Planned Behavior

Icek Ajzen in 1991 proposed the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) wherein the individual’s behaviour is best predicted by one’s intentions; intentions are in turn, predicted by attitudes about the behaviour, the subjective encasing the execution of the behaviour, and the individual’s perception of their control over the behaviour. Attitudes are a term used in psychology to refer to people’s views or thoughts about a particular thing or object. Attitudes contain an emotion dimension and an attitude may be positive, negative or neutral. Attitudes are results of previous experiences and what we have heard others say, and they are relatively stable.
Preceding this theory was a similar theory of reasoned action by Ajzen and Foshbein (1975, 1980) which stated that when people evaluate the suggested behaviour as positive (attitude), and they think their significant others want them to perform the behaviour (subjective norm), this results in a higher intention (motivations) and they are more likely to do so. Later on behaviour appeared not to be 100% voluntary and under control, this resulted in the addition of perceived behavioural control. With this addition the theory was called the theory of planned behaviour.
