The theory of evolution by natural selection doesn’t attempt to explain how life first began or why living things are on earth. Natural selection is a consistent difference in survival and reproduction between different genotypes, or even different genes, in what we could call reproductive success. A genotype is a group of organisms sharing a specific genetic makeup. The theory of evolution by natural selection explains the scientifically observable processes that change the physical characteristics of living things through time.
