Introduction
Abortion, by definition, is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. It is still one of most controversial topics in the United States. It is also a very split topic, with 57% people who are against it and 53% people who are for it. While it is legal throughout the entirety of the United States, each state handles abortions differently. For example, in states like Arizona, Ohio, New Jersey, and Florida an abortion must be performed by a licensed physician. Other states such as, California, New York, Washington, and New Hampshire an abortion does not have to be performed by a licensed …show more content…
Abortion is also frowned upon according to traditional text in the Buddhism faith because of the belief in rebirth and reincarnation according to karma. But some modern Buddhists look at abortion as permissible. The Muslim faith refers abortion as forbidden, but acceptable in certain cases such as if the pregnancy was putting the mother’s life in danger. But even some of the modern believers of the religions mentioned above believe that abortion is a just and right thing. So, as you can see most of the top practicing religions are against the act of abortion but people in the modern age view abortion as acceptable. In my ibook i am going to go in-depth with each religion explaining each of their views in detail so the reader can get a sense of what each religion actually believes about abortion. I’ll also compare the beliefs of those religions to the current society we live in today and how they conflict. The main idea of this ibook is to show the reader religious, societal, and moral beliefs to then further help them on making a decision on wether the act of abortion is something you are in favor of or not. My goal is to give you loads of information in order to contribute to interreligous dialogue …show more content…
Although the sacred text of Islamic faith, The Qur’an, doesn’t say specifically that abortion is wrong we can take certain points of it to come to a conclusion that abortion is forbidden. First we’ll look at how the Qur’an views life as a whole. Qur'an 5:32 states, “Whosoever has spared the life of a soul, it is as though he has spared the life of all people. Whosoever has killed a soul, it is as though he has murdered all of mankind.” This shows how serious murder is in the Islamic faith. Specifically referring to the, “Whosoever has killed a soul, it is as though he has murdered all of mankind.” The word soul for example isn’t just a body limbs, and a head, it’s everyone that is a human or that will become a human has a soul. The controversy with when a fetus obtains ‘Ruh’ or a soul is debatable among Islamic believers. Some believe the fetus obtains a soul at 120 days while some at 40 days. Although there is debate on when the soul is obtained, this point clearly shows that even int he womb you are still taking a soul. Furthermore, from Qur'an 17:32, “Kill not your offspring for fear of poverty; it is We who provide for them and for you. Surely, killing them is a great sin.” Not only does this further proves the point of how abortion is a great sin, but also explicitly says how you should not kill your fetus. Although abortion in the Islamic faith is disgraceful,
