Poe’s symptoms could point to several different causes of death. There have been many theories on the cause of Poe’s death, including alcoholism and rabies. It is still a mystery of what caused Poe to die. Although, most scholars believe that Poe died of drinking too much alcohol. Based on the four readings, it is clear that Poe died of rabies because he was experiencing hallucinations, confusions and was hydrophobic.
One reason why Poe died of rabies was because he was experiencing hallucinations. Dr. Benitez said that Poe was perspiring heavily and shouting at imaginary companions (187).
