Theories Of Semi-Overdress

Decent Essays
You hear it all the time, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”, and this theory is a proven psychological theory that when you semi-overdress, you gain respect. Why did I create a whole new term “semi-overdress”? You get the point more by the term that I have coined so you stand out at the higher echelon of your job title and among your peers. If I say overdress, like many do, you wear a Tuxedo to a janitorial position…don’t be THAT guy. Dress for respect, stay clean-shaven if you need to, and don’t you DARE come into work on your days off in a t-shirt and flip flops.

One of the arguments Thoreau makes during the chapter Economy: Part II is that people are judged too much by what they wear. I agree with his statement; people shouldn’t have to worry about what clothes they wear. In paragraph 14, Thoreau says, “Most behave as if they believed that their prospects for life would be ruined if they should do it (wear a patch over their knee to mend their pants). It would be easier for them to hobble to town with a broken leg than with a broken pantaloon.” Although today many people don’t care what someone wears, people still judge you depending on what you wear.…

In his 1977 essay, “In Defense of Masks”, Kenneth Gergen introduces the concept of multiple personas and personalities as being ‘masks’. In his psychological and sociological research, Gergen concludes that people do not have a coherent sense of identity and need masks to be happy, healthy, and successful in society. I agree with Gergen because different situations call for different personalities; such as acting professional for a job interview, being lively with friends, or maintaining a perfect image of yourself for other. Most jobs call for a certain degree of professionalism. People put on masks while at work to give off an impression of uniformity.…

Book Review The Essential 55 One of the earlier rules I found vital for first grade students to follow is rule number two, “Make eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on him or her at all times. If someone makes a comment, turn and face that person” (Clark, R., 2003, p.1). Teachers would find this rule to be an effective confidence booster when trying to communicate with one or more students.…

They are wearing clothing which is appropriate for their job and which fits the role. Although many women servers do not like their clothing, and it is not as comfortable as one would hope; how can one assume all women feel their gender and self-identity is being hid? It is a personal opinion that one cannot make such a judgement off of self-observation and perception. Ultimately, “work ensemble” in any field is a “work ensemble” and society has accepted this as a fact and everyday occurrence. We see in the chapter that many in the restaurants analyzed; did make light of their attire and it was not in favor with anyone’s fashion choice.…
