I think that it is someone's own choice because in the book Dylan has a lot of help from Ainsley but he never takes it. Also Glen tries to help Dylan but Dylan's life doesn't get better until he accepts the help himself.
In the story Dylan is constantly being approached by Ainsley and being always trying to help him but nothing is changing. Twitch has many people trying to help him like Ainsley, and Dyla, that try to save his life by trying to make him go to the doctor but he doesn't accept the help and later on dies.
Jenna and Twitch never took the help that they were given so the life didn't get better but instead got worse, only Dylan who took the help started to get a better life and actually use the help he is given.

An example from my personal experiences is when I was at coop one day and someone was persistent in trying to get there camera set up but didn't know how.
The person at my coop was trying to set up their camera, and didn't want any help even though a lot of people where trying to help them. It wasn't until they almost gave up that then they accepted the help and their life got better.
