Since the early 1900s, advancements in the modern society have provided unique accomplishments as well as challenges, which are shaping the modern era through both conflicting values of freedom and efficiency. Finding the balances between these two and other values sets the framework of organizational theories of thought. There are five commonly known organizational theories such as the classical, humanist, neoclassical, systems, and new public management theory that all try to create a specific balance between these conflicts. Several of these organizational theories exemplify unique criteria for democracy and bureaucracy, however some are more appropriate and closely related to these values than others. Bureaucracy and democracy differ in their management of balance. Bureaucracy as defined by LeMay is the “administration of large-scale organization through departments and their agencies (in government such subdivisions are often called Bureaus) that are managed by a set of appointing officials who follow established routines or “standard operating procedures” …show more content…
Taylor’s key philosophy centers on four unique principles of efficiency, rationality, productivity, and profit. Since organizational theories were still in the infancy stage, there was no particular guide of what worked or what did not. Through trial and error and scientific methods of testing, established and redefined methods of management and administration as well as productivity, he was able to conclude correct and least effective methods of administration. Taylor emphasized a formal structure of management where top-level administrators issued guidance down to lower levels that were carried out in the most practical way. He also claimed there was only one best way of completing any task. This thought is where the scientific method and testing proved
