This Magnet hospital believes in the principles outlined by Dr. Watson to focus on the patient and the family at the center moreover on the caring moments that will transform the patient and the nurse. Knowing what little I do about any of the nursing theories, I believe many theories may be in play on any given day in the emergency room. Kanter’s Theory of Organizational Empowerment has a point in stating that if nurses feel empowered, they are more likely to be satisfied at work and feel like they may achieve high-quality patient outcomes (Spence Lashinger, Finegan, Shamian, & Wilk, 2003). Betty Neuman’s Systems Theory also plays a large part in emergency room care daily. Dr. Neuman focused on prevention and care for the entire body, emergency room nurses spend time teaching preventative measures to help decrease visits to the hospital. If the nursing profession continues to overburden, overwork, and increase expectations, the rate of burnout among nurses will only increase. Using Jean Watson’s caring theory, we should treat the nurse as a whole person and allow for more self-care so they can provide for others. In Kanter's theory of empowerment, we need nurses to stand up and tell leadership when they are feeling overworked and overburdened so more resources can be added to assist them to give the best care possible to our patients. The focus of the Conservation of resources theory is on the resources required for life, but if the nurse cannot focus because they lack elsewhere, they can never grow. Nursing theorists seem to have been predicting burnout as they developed their way of thinking, even before burnout was as big of an issue as it is today.
