Theoretical Links between Gender Equality and Sustainable Development

Abstract:

Sustainable development encompasses socio-cultural, economic and environmental aspects and covers an extremely broad realm. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without the full and equal contribution of women. Sustainable development will be a mysterious goal unless women’s involvement to environmental management is known and supported. So far gender issues have been first and foremost dealt with as a social issue. A woman has an indispensable responsibility in the development of sustainable and an approach to natural resource management.Their full contribution is therefore essential to attain sustainable development. Gender equality is a goal in its own right but also a key factor for sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability. By providing the same opportunities to women and men, including in decision-making in all kinds of activities, a sustainable path of development can be achieved to make sure that women’s and men’s interests are both taken into account in the allocation of resources. Gender dimensions of sustainable development can be branded by the allotment of resources between women and men, on the one hand, and, on the other, by how these resources are spread over time and generations.
