Roger Nelson phoned Agent Winston Powell who was still in C.E. Mason’s lab, where he was scrounging about for information on C.E. Mason’s research. Agent Powell shared information about his meeting with Margarita Mason, omitting the details of the gun, but emphasizing the fact that the KEG went missing. He made Agent Powell admit that Mrs. Margarita had been instructed by the FBI—his boss—to “keep an eye” on her husband’s work to make sure it didn’t get into foreign hands.
Since Roger had bugged on C.E. Mason’s car, Agent Powell knew that C.E. Mason had gone to the Dulles International. Then tapping into the airline’s booking electronic database, they found he had made reservations to fly to the Midwest: “What in the hell for?”
“He’s en route to Kansas City.”
“We know that. But why?”
“To present a paper at a conference, his wife said.” Roger said.
“What chutzpah!” Agent Powell exclaimed: “He gotta know we’re watching him. He’s being so—”
“Cavalier?” Roger interjected.

Margarita’s face turn crimson and she did a quick walkthrough of NSL to ascertain the extent of the damage. She found no further evidence of damage to the office or the lab. Repairing the broken window was inconsequential financially to NSL's budget since business insurance coverage would discharge the required expenses. If not, she could dip into NSL’s rainy-day fund to replace the window pane. Nevertheless, as a precaution, Margarita dialed 911 to report the vandalism at NSL.
